Tashi Lhunpo Monastery is one of the largest monasteries in Tibet, and is one of the six major monasteries of the Gelug sect along with Drepung Monastery, Sera Monastery and Ganden Monastery in Lhasa, Taer Monastery in Qinghai and Labrang Monastery in southern Gansu.

Tashi Lhunpo Monastery was built in the 12th year of the Ming Dynasty (1447), and the founder was Gendun Zhuba, who was the apprentice of Tsongkhapa and was later traced back to the first Dalai Lama. The temple is located on the hillside of Nisiri in the west of Shigatse City. With an total area of nearly 300,000 square meters, it is the largest monastery of the Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism in U-Tsang area. "Tashi Lhunpo ", which means "auspicious Mount Sumeru" in Tibetan, is a long way from Shigatse, and you can see the golden dome of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery glistening in the sun. The monastery has been the seat since 4th Panchen Lama. It is divided into four parts: the palace (Panchen Lazhang), the Kambu Conference (the highest organ of the Tibetan local government), the Panchen Pagoda Hall, and the School of Classics. The School of Economics consists of the Tsoqin Hall, 4 Zhaluns and 64 subordinate Kangcuns.

At the entrance of the temple, visitors can see the spectacular temple complex. All the brown buildings with golden roofs above the white houses are the spiritual pagodas of the Panchen Lama of all dynasties. In front of the right is a tall white wall. During festivals, huge thangkas are displayed here, and the whole temple is surrounded by a high wall.

Go straight from the gate of the monastery, turn left and go up to reach the Qiangba Buddha Hall, which is "Qiangba Kang" in Tibetan. The Qiangba Buddha Hall was built in 1461, with a height of 30 meters and a 5-storey hall. The entire Maitreya Hall is empty, in order to enshrine the gilt-bronze Jampa Buddha statue cast by the ninth Panchen Lama Choekyi Nyima in 1914. The statue is 22.4 meters high, and a middle finger is 1.4 meters long. Meters, shoulder width of 11.5 meters, rosette height of 3.8 meters, total height of 26.2 meters, is the world's largest bronze Buddha statue. This seated statue uses 279 kilograms of gold, 115,000 kilograms of copper, more than 300 pearls, and more than 1,400 precious gems such as amber, coral, and turquoise. Only the eyebrows of the big Buddha statue are inlaid with an extra-large diamond, and the one with the head of a silkworm is inlaid. Thirty diamonds, more than 60 pearls and other precious stones were made by 900 artisans in 9 years. The vivid and solemn shape of the Daqiangba Buddha and the exquisite manufacturing process reflect the superb skills of the Tibetan people. On the surrounding walls are thousands of gold powder portraits of Jampa Buddha with a red background. The Han Buddhist Hall in front of the 10th Panchen Lama Temple was built for Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty. There are two seats inside, the one on the left is the special seat of the Panchen Lama, which was originally used to receive high-ranking officials and dignitaries from the mainland such as ministers stationed in Tibet.

To the east of the Qiangpa Buddha Hall is the 10th Panchen Lama Temple. This pagoda houses the remains of the tenth Panchen Lama who passed away in 1989. His statue stands in front of the pagoda. The top of the pagoda is painted with mandala patterns and the walls are painted with real gold Buddha statues. It is said that in 1989, the Panchen Lama returned to Tashi Lhunpo Monastery after a long absence from Shigatse. When he saw that there were three main buildings, only a space was left in the middle, and he said it was a pity. Unexpectedly, as a prophecy, he passed away due to overwork a few days later, and his spiritual pagoda was later built in this place.

Continuing to the east, a white palace is the Panchen Palace. It is located above the Red Palace and has always been the residence of the Panchen Lamas of all dynasties, although the current architectural structure was built in the period of the sixth Panchen Lama (1738-1780). But it is not open to the public, and interested parties can enter several small halls at the front of the Panchen Palace from the courtyard of the tenth Panchen Pagoda.

Further east, the tall building is the famous Weijueganxia Hall, in which there is the spiritual pagoda of the Fourth Panchen Lama (1567-1662). The Fourth Panchen Lama is a very accomplished living Buddha in the history of Tibet. Teacher of the Dalai Lama. His spiritual pagoda was built in the first year of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1662) and completed in 4 years. The pagoda is 11 meters high, costing more than 2,700 taels of gold, more than 33,000 taels of silver, more than 78,000 catties of copper, more than 9,000 feet of silk and satin, and more than 7,000 pieces of agate, pearls, corals, and otoliths.

Two to the east is the Tsokin Hall. The Tsochin Hall is the largest building in the whole monastery. It is a huge complex building. In the center of the scripture hall is the throne of the Panchen Lama. There are three Buddhist halls behind the scripture hall, the Sakyamuni Hall is in the middle, the Tara Hall on the east side, and the Qiangba Hall on the west side. There is a 5-meter-high gilded bronze statue of Sakyamuni in the Shakyamuni Hall. It is said that the statue contains the relic of Sakyamuni, as well as the skull of Gendun Zhuba's sutra teacher Xiraosang and Tsongkhapa's skull. hair.

Outside the gate of the main hall of Cuoqin is the lecture hall of the monastery, which is a courtyard surrounded by corridors. In the past, the Panchen Lama often preached sermons to the monks of the whole monastery here. Before lunch on weekdays, the lamas would gather in the main hall to study the scriptures and debate the scriptures in the afternoon. It is also the center of festivals and Buddhist activities. Standing there watching the coming and going of believers and monks, do not have a lot of fun. There is a huge prayer flag erected in the middle of the courtyard, and thousands of Buddha statues are painted on the surrounding walls.

There are many small halls in the main hall of Cuoqin, and there are many things to see. From the main stairs, along the middle-level balcony, you can reach the Shakyamuni Hall and a small stupa hall. From here, you can go through the kitchen to the temple of the gods, which dates back to the 15th century and is one of the oldest buildings in the temple. In the center of the hall is the seat of the Panchen Lama, the seat cushions of the monks are neatly arranged, and various thangkas depicting the reincarnation of the Panchen Lama hang from the top. In the inner hall in the middle is a beautiful statue of Sakyamuni. On the right is the Hall of Tara. The Hall of Tara is called "Zhuomakang" in Tibetan. There is a bronze statue of white Tara more than 2 meters high, and there are green statues of Tara in clay sculptures on both sides. "Tara" is the incarnation of Avalokitesvara who saves the world and is worshipped by Tibetan Buddhism. Princess Wencheng of the Tang Dynasty was highly respected in Tibetan history, and was considered by Tibetans to be the incarnation of White Tara. There are 21 incarnations of Tara in the Tara Temple. After coming out from here, you can go up the stairs by the kitchen to visit three connected small halls, and then there are four small halls, which are dedicated to Tara, the fourth Panchen Lama, the future Buddha and Tsongkhapa respectively. .

Go down a few steps from here and turn left, there is a protective shrine without a Buddha statue. On the right here is the Shakyamuni Temple, which houses many symbols of Mahayana Buddhism, including snakes, old armor and a statue of an angry goddess on the right.

Going further down, you will pass a long hall with imitation statues of Sakyamuni at the age of 12, and then climb a small ladder, you can see the first Dalai Lama, the second and third Panchen Lama and several other past dynasties. the tower. Here you can also see the burial pagoda of Shi Song Nanjie, the fifth to the ninth Panchen Lama.
